Nulls subpulse drift and mode-switching in pulsars: the polar-cap surface

چکیده

Little attention has so far been paid to the division of the observed population between pulsars of the two spin directions that are possible. Almost all pulsars with positive corotational charge density at the polar caps are expected to satisfy space-charge limited flow boundary conditions. Charge separation by blackbody photo-electric transitions in moving ions limits the acceleration potential, analogously with the more usually considered pair creation. But the limitation is more severe so that proton and ion energies can be relativistic but not ultra-relativistic, and these allow the growth of Langmuir-mode induced turbulence that couples directly with the radiation field, as shown by Asseo, Pelletier & Sol. The consequences of this, and of the several possible physical states of the polar cap, are described, qualitatively, as possible explanations for the complex phenomena of nulls, subpulse drift and mode-switching observed in sub-sets of pulsars.

Thermal radiation from hot polar cap in pulsars

Thermal radiation from hot polar caps is examined in radio pulsars with drifting subpulses. It is argued that if these subpulses correspond to sparking discharges of the inner acceleration region right above the polar cap surface then a simple relationship between the observed subpulse drift rate in radio and thermal X-ray luminosity from the polar cap heated by sparks should exist. This relati...

Drifting subpulses and inner acceleration regions in radio pulsars

The classical vacuum gap model of Ruderman & Sutherland, in which spark-associated subbeams of subpulse emission circulate around the magnetic axis due to the E × B drift of spark plasma filaments, provides a natural and plausible physical mechanism of the subpulse drift phenomenon. Moreover, this is the only model with quantitative predictions that can be compared with observations. Recent pro...

Interrelation between radio and X-ray signatures of drifting subpulses in pulsars

A partially screened vacuum gap model of the inner acceleration region in pulsars is examined with respect to the drifting subpulse phenomenon and the polar cap heating by the streams of back-flowing particles generated in sparks associated with drifting subpules. We investigated correlation between the intrinsic drift rate and polar cap heating rate and found that they are coupled to each othe...

X-ray pulsar radiation from polar cap heated by back-flow bombardment

We consider the problem of the thermal X-ray radiation from the hot polar cap of radio pulsars showing evidence of E×B subpulse drift in radio band. In our resent Paper I, within the partially screened gap (PSG) model of inner acceleration region we derived a simple relationship between the drift rate of subpulses observed in a radio-band and the thermal X-ray luminosity from polar caps heated ...
